At M Group Services, we are aware of the impact our driving habits can have on people as well as the environment.

As part of our commitment to innovation, we are incredibly proud of our collaboration with Samsara to develop the next generation of in-vehicle safety systems.

Working to positively influence driver behaviour, the system provides a real-time digital blueprint of every aspect of a vehicle’s operation - from location, to speed, braking and vehicle performance. The technology provides the data to not only heighten our people’s awareness of their own driving behaviours, but also allows us to optimise the vehicle’s safety.

Using the dual-facing AI dash cameras we can monitor the context in real-time via Samsara’s remote telematics portal. This allows us to push in-cab audio alerts that warn drivers of risk factors such as tailgating, speeding, or mobile phone usage.

When thinking about driving behaviour, the environment can sometimes be a second thought. How fast we drive and how hard we brake has a big impact on our carbon emissions and the planet. The Samsara technology allows us to work out our miles per gallon (MPG) and carbon dioxide emissions and we can use this information alongside other data to improve efficiency and build on the work we are doing to reach our net zero goal.

By using the technology to influence driver behaviour, we have seen fantastic results, with a 4.8% decline in the amount of fuel used. Wear and tear on our vehicles has reduced, as well as our drivers reaching their destination with a calmer mindset.

Speaking on our collaboration with Samsara, Tony Draper, SHEQ Director at MGSPFS, said: “We now have the oversight and data to help prevent incidents before they occur through feedback and coaching. This also enables us to fully understand how the incident has occurred and exonerate drivers of any blame.

“This technology will lower the likelihood of incidents, will improve driving skills across the group and will help us to achieve our carbon reduction targets by using less fuel.”

Leanne Sheff, Telematics Manager at MGSPFS, said: “The data allows us to provide the group with actionable insights for driving standards, economical driving and even how effective someone’s coaching is. Our In-Cab real time audible alerts allow a driver to instantly self-coach and correct behaviour alongside the driver app for continued self-monitoring. The system allows operational support by eliminating guesswork with ariel view of map and traffic data as well as smarter dispatching decisions for reactive works.”

At M Group Services, we are committed to finding ways to make our operations more sustainable, while protecting the welfare of our people. As a Group, we are committed to reaching net zero by 2050 and achieving a 50% reduction in our direct emissions by 2030.
