M Group Services and its businesses are committed to putting the health, wellbeing and safety of our people first while helping deliver essential infrastructure to the UK and Ireland.

We are delighted to announce M Group Services Plant & Fleet Solutions (MGSPFS) has been shortlisted for the Fleet Safety Innovation Award for a system that puts safety first.

Our shortlisting, at this year’s UK Fleet Champion Awards, recognises an industry first. A collaboration between MGSPFS and three of our supply chain: Brucom, Motormax and Samsara. This system enhances our current solution to further improve the safety of our people and the public.

Samsara’s video-based safety technology has been used by MGSPFS for a number of years. It provides the outward and inward facing cameras in the cab, with the inward camera using artificial intelligence to collect vital video footage of any incident that occurs.

Brucom’s technology is an intelligence-based system which provides an innovative audio alert to our drivers. This technology demonstrates potential health and safety risks when the vehicle is in use. For instance, a few of these potential hazards are: overloading the truck bed, tipper bodies not being stored correctly and cranes not being secured.

Motormax supply a live five-camera system, bespoke side detection with an audible left turn alarm and their exclusive Safetymax warning system.

Through the Samsara portal, our drivers are aware of any potential issues by displaying visual and spoken voice warnings. These alerts along with video footage of important incidents are sent to the cloud which can be reviewed in seconds by line managers, logistics controllers and transport managers. This means super-fast visibility to protect our people and the public as well as using the data and video for future learning and education.

Tony Draper, Head of SHEQ at MGSPFS, said: “M Group Services Plant and Fleet Solutions do exactly that, we provide plant and fleet to all operating businesses that make up M Group Services. With the UK’s fourth largest fleet of over 8,500 vehicles comes huge responsibility and this system allows us to review any recorded incidents and discover what action was taken to resolve the problem.

“This technology is forward-thinking and puts the safety of our people and the public first. We are proud that our system has been recognised in the Fleet Safety Innovation category at the UK Fleet Champion Awards this year. We look forward to hearing the outcome of the awards in October.”

The UK Fleet Champion Awards were created by Brake, the road safety charity that has been working with communities and organisations across the UK since 1995. Brake introduced the Global Fleet Champions campaign which recognises the hard work of fleet teams both in the UK and globally.

Safety is at the forefront of everything we do so being shortlisted is an incredible achievement.

Looking to the future, technology such as this could lead to eco-driving, a style of driving that reduces the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. These safety systems could allow drivers to access information which helps them consider their fuel consumption and potentially minimise the wear and tear on vehicles.

The awards ceremony is due to take place on Thursday 20 October at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester and we wish the team the best of luck.
