M Group Services, the leading infrastructure services in the UK and Ireland, is proud to report reducing levels of carbon intensity and increasing levels of community engagement in its third annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) & Innovation report.

Sharing a snapshot of significant highlights achieved in the year April 2022 to March 2023, Andrew Hunt, Director of ESG and Innovation, talks through some of the key successes and what to expect as the Group looks to 2024 and beyond, in a short video launched to support the ESG Report.

As a Group, we have committed to cutting our carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050. This annual report outlines the key improvements that have happened in 2022-2023 as we continue to protect the environment, while supporting our people and the communities in which we work.

Highlights showing the growing levels of ESG&I activity across the Group include:

  • Our STEM ambassadors have engaged with over 100,265 students and we have recruited 38 apprentices in the year.
  • A total of 1,434,204 business miles were undertaken by electric vehicles.
  • Carbon intensity has reduced by 16% when compared with the previous year, as shown by our greenhouse gas emissions reporting for 2022-23, which is verified to accounting standard ISO 14064.
  • Maintaining our ‘best-in-class’ ESG rating in the business services sector from independent ESG risk rating agency, Sustainalytics. This year, we received an ESG rating of 8.3 out of 100 based on in-depth independent analysis, compared to a sector average of 21.9. The rating puts the Group among the top one per cent of global companies for its commitment to the environment and sustainability and means the Group has a ‘negligible risk’ of reputational and operational risks through its direct and indirect operations.
  • Showcasing our governance procedures in detail, including our Risk Management Committees and our compliance with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This year, our report has an increasing focus on our people and the innovative and inspiring ways they are contributing towards the Group’s ESG commitment.

From taking part in mental health awareness initiatives to conserving trees, our people are integral to our ESG journey, and we are proud to include so many real life case studies from our people across our operating businesses and contracts.

In the year 2022/23, 275 apprentices continued their training, over 250 ex-armed forces personnel joined our workforce, and we welcomed 27 graduates into our business. These opportunities attract and develop the next generation of highly skilled, forward-thinking and technically competent people within the infrastructure services sector.

We are incredibly proud of the work done to form our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) groups over the year. Building a truly inclusive environment empowers broader diversity across the Group, its divisions and operating businesses.

For the third year we have aligned our key ESG themes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, placing a spotlight on the part we play in the overall global agenda to develop and grow our business in a sustainable way.

Andrew Findlay, Chief Executive, at M Group Services, said: “I am delighted that in the year to March 2023 there have been increasing levels of ESG&I activity across our Group.

“This report highlights some of our key achievements and milestones between April 2022 and March 2023, showcasing the wealth of talent and energy that our people, clients and supply chain partners have demonstrated to make our progress possible.

“Our commitment and approach to ESG&I performance is gathering real momentum and making a difference in the real world of essential infrastructure."
