The Utility Week Awards are dedicated to recognising the positive and progressive contributions in UK utilities.

A team of independent judges whittled down more than 300 entries across 16 categories, including eight that are brand new for this year.

The winners will be unveiled during the awards ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on 5 December.

Callisto for the Unlocking Data award.

Callisto has introduced a data analysis tool that helps to increase opportunities for customers to save money on their energy bills, reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

The tool was introduced in October 2021 to help energy suppliers carry out the many billions of calculations required for the assessment to move their customers from non-half-hourly to elective half-hourly settlement. This was set to simplify the assessment process, supporting energy suppliers to test new time-of-use tariffs – providing cost saving and environmental benefits.

This tool has helped to calculate millions of customers' half-hourly data and compare this to the non-half-hourly settlement calculations. Just making the assessment on approximately one million customers over a 12-month period meant processing 17.5 billion pieces of data.

Morrison Energy Services for the Skills and Diversity award.

LoWEG ((London Women in Engineering Group) was created in November 2022 to fill a gap as there were no London-wide groups open to women working in Highway based roles.

The group is open to women working in Council’s, contractors, utility companies, TfL, the DfT, lobby-groups and students. LoWEG now has over 300 members across the country.

While LoWEG is a new group, it has already made a huge difference to the wellbeing of its members. By providing a safe space for women to discuss issues such as workplace sexism, they are helping those officers to remain in the Highways / Utility industries. The group has members who have considered leaving due to problems relating to their gender, but LoWEG are arming them with the support and information they need to promote inclusion within their workspace.

Bradley Worrell, Environmental Manager at Morrison Energy Services for the Rising Star Award.

Bradley Worrell has only worked in the industry for five years, joining Morrison Energy Services (MES) as a Senior Environmental Advisor in 2021 on its Cadent Construction Management Organisation (CMO) management team.

Despite his short time in the industry, Bradley has been critical in delivering MES’ environmental initiatives. His knowledge, enthusiasm and initiative has seen MES implement several key innovations and technologies to reduce its environmental impact.

Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA), a Morrison Water Services (MWS) and AECOM joint venture, for the Carbon Reduction Award.

While delivering safe, innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective projects is implicit within CWA’s purpose, the business has gone a step further and implemented an extensive Carbon Management programme to meet its own and client’s net zero ambitions.

The contract is making substantial, long-term changes to the way it delivers projects and achieves its carbon targets by encouraging innovation, developing technology, and changing working behaviour to create a net zero environment.

Morrison Water Services (MWS) for the Unlocking Data Award.

Morrison Water Services’ Safe Dig AI technology helps to eliminate risk. Safe Dig AI helps to keep operatives safe by ensuring they know exactly what is under the ground before they break into it.

This revolutionary system uses Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to compile packs of utility plans in as little as 30 minutes. These digital packs are then shared with our operatives via a user-friendly, intuitive, and feature-rich app that can be accessed via a desktop and mobile phone.

Alistair Nicol, Programme Manager, Caledonia Water Alliance for the Rising Star Award.

Alistair Nicol started working for Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) in 2016 as a Business Analyst. From the outset, it was clear he is an extremely talented and inspiring individual. He has rapidly risen through the ranks, becoming a Planning Manager. During this time, he has transformed the reporting processes, enabling CWA to work more efficiently and accurately. Alistair is currently responsible for leading a team of seven and managing a project portfolio worth over £140 million per annum.

Morrison Water Services for the Infrastructure Delivery Award.

The Morrison Water Services (MWS) Trunk Main Leakage Team is repairing three water mains between Seven Sisters Road and Finsbury Park Road in Hackney, to reduce the risk of future bursts. The team is utilising an innovative Die Draw solution to minimise bore size requirements and limit disruption to customers in this highly congested area of London.

Using the Die Draw method avoided the need for pipe replacement, which would have been extremely disruptive to homes and communities and would have involved excessive road closures and noise pollution from construction work.
